A short summary of this paper. With the help of the town mayor named Rachel—a widow with two children with whom he later became very intimate—Harry was able to detect some irregularities in the environment near the volcano — high pH levels in the lake, dying trees and squirrels, and springs belching hot gasses. Harry and the mayor immediately warned the public about the strong possibility of violent eruption.
But the volcano erupted and strong earthquakes shook the town even before the community people could prepare to evacuate, causing panic and chaos. When he noticed some abnormal phenomena in the vicinity of the volcano and believed that these were major causes for concern, he was implying that he was an expert in his field.
Expertise in a particular field gives one a title of leadership in that field. He did not give up his job.
